SACREEE was established to contribute towards increased access to modern energy services and improved energy security across the SADC Region through the promotion of market-based uptake of renewable energy (RE) and energy efficient (EE) technologies and energy services.
Policy and regulatory frameworks are increasingly transcending borders hence SACREEE is promoting the regional approach in renewable energy and energy efficiency policies and strategies. The overall approach is to develop harmonized policy, regulatory, and institutional frameworks conducive to broader and accelerated uptake of renewable energy and energy efficient technologies and practices in the region and Member States. Gender Mainstreaming in energy policies and programmes is prioritised.
To this end, it is SACREEEs mandate to play a key role in the implementation of the recently adopted Southern Africa Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Strategy and Action Plan (REEESAP).
The REEESAP is a regional framework from which SADC Member States will develop their own RE&EE Strategies and Action Plans and will kick-start national processes to accelerate energy transitions in the region.
Some of the strategies and actions outlined in the SADC REEESAP that are being implemented by SACREEE include:
Supporting the creation of policies, strategies, plans and other frameworks to ensure an enabling environment for RE/EE investments;
Supporting the development of projects and technologies and transfer know how to meet demand targets;
Building capacity to design, develop, build, implement and maintain RE/EE projects.
Strategic objectives
Some of REEESAP’s key strategic objectives are to:
Achieve energy security by closing the current supply/demand deficit largely in the power sector and enabling future economic growth and industrialization;
Achieve low carbon development paths and climate resilient energy systems in MS and the Region;
Mobilize financial resources for investment for both RE/EE projects and manufacturing of RE/EE equipment in the SADC Region;
Increase availability, accessibility, and affordability of modern energy services particularly to the poor in order to enhance their socio-economic status;
