The country has 246MW installed capacity from hydropower which provides approximately 68% of the country’s electricity needs, and the remainder is from diesel power plants, solar PV and biomass (bagasse). The Ministry of Water, Energy and Hydrocarbons (Ministère de l'Eau, de l'Energie et des Hydrocarbures, (MEEH) is responsible for the national energy policy and coordination of the activities in the energy sector. The Direction de l’Electricite et des Energies Renouvelables (DEER) implements policy in the electricity and renewable energy sector. JIRAMA (Jiro sy Rano Malagasy – Malgache Power and Water) is the state-owned utility that is responsible for generation, transmission and distribution of electricity and the provision of and water services.
Renewable energy sources include hydro, wind, solar and biomass (bagasse), and the country has renewable energy targets of 79% by 2030 and 100% by 2050.
The country’s average energy access stands at 27.5% comprising 66% and 11% urban and rural access respectively.
