Namibia has 644MW installed capacity which is primarily generated from four NamPower owned generation stations at Anixas 22 MW (diesel), Paratus 16 MW (diesel), Van Eck 120 MW (coal), Ruacana 330 MW (hydro) which is augmented by 170MW solar PV 22 sites scattered across the country while 60% is sourced from imports from Eskom South Africa and the Southern Africa Power Pool. 

The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) is responsible for the national energy policy and coordination of the activities in the energy sector. NamPower is the country’s electricity generation and transmission utility and there are four Regional Electricity Distributors (REDs) which are responsible for supplying electricity to the residents in specific regions.  The Electricity Control Board (ECB) is the regulatory authority and a member of the Regional Energy Regulators Association. Namibia is a member of the Regional Energy Regulators Association and an active participant on the SAPP market. The Namibia Energy Institute (NEI) is the National Focal Institution for SACREEE. Namibia introduced the Modified Single Buyer Model (MSB) market platform in 2019 which is intended to increase the participation of the private sector in the energy sector.

The national average energy access rate for Namibia is 56% consisting of 75% and 36% urban and rural access, respectively. The country has a 70% renewable energy target by 2030.
