The DRC has a total installed capacity of 2,819MW, 1,914MW operating capacity and peak demand of 4,213MW ¹. Hydropower accounts for 99.4% of the total national energy mix while solar, biomass and wind account for 0.3%, 0.2% and 0.1% respectively.
The Ministry of Energy and Hydraulic Resources(Ministre de l’Energie et de l’Hydraulique) is responsibility for coordinating the development and management of the energy sector. Société Nationale d'Électricité (SNEL) traditionally had the responsibility for generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in the DRC and the Electricity Law (2014) paved the way for competition in the electricity sector. SNEL still remains the largest power company, operating approximately 95% of installed capacity in the country. The National Rural and Peri-urban Electrification and Energy Services Agency (ANSER) is in charge of rural electrification. The DRC is a member of the Southern Africa Power Pool, however, not a member of the Regional Energy Regulators Association. The Ministry of Hydraulic Resources and Electricity is the SACREEE National Focal Institution.
The national average energy access rate is 21% which is made up of 41% urban and 1% rural access.
