Lesotho

In October 2022, Lesotho had 74MW installed capacity and operating capacity 70MW from hydropower against peak demand of 187MW ¹. The Department of Energy (DoE) in the Ministry of Energy and Meteorology (MEM) is responsible for energy policy planning, development and implementation of projects. The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA) and the Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC) oversee the transmission and distribution of energy.  The Muela Hydro Power Station generates the bulk of the energy for the country under the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.  Lesotho is a member of the Southern Africa Power Pool, and the country is represented on the Regional Energy Regulators Association by theLesotho Electricity and Water Authority (LEWA)

There is potential from hydropower, wind generation, and solar PV. The average energy access rate for Lesotho is 41%.   The access contribution is 69% and rural access stand at 29%.
