SACREEE in collaboration with a Consortium of 11 European and 17 African partners is undertaking the ENERGy access and green transition collaboratively demonstrated in urban and rural areas in AfrICA (ENERGICA) project that focuses on energy access and sustainable energy development on both continents.
The main objective of the ENERGICA is to demonstrate the efficient implementation of renewable energy technologies (RETs) to match local contexts’ needs. The ENERGICA innovative solutions are being implemented in Madagascar within the framework of the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) nexus where nanogrids are being deployed in 50 rural villages. In Sierra Leone the project is demostrating low-tech biogas and water purification systems in peri-urban and urban contexts, while in Kenya the focus is on demonstration and replicability of e-mobility boda-boda and smart energy management systems for battery fleet management and renewable energy integration.
The three different demonstration sites rely upon local Energy Transition Boards which manage community-scale Integrated Community Energy Systems. Based on these methodologies and respective innovative technologies, ENERGICA demonstrates positive social, environmental, technical, and economic impacts from the high energy efficiency and low carbon emission RETs.
