Tanzania has 1,695MW installed capacity and operating capacity of 1,529MW. The Tanzania Energy Supply Company (TANESCO) is a vertically integrated utility, wholly owned by the Government.  Tanzania's total power installed capacity is 1,605.86 MW (2021). Tanzania's electricity generation mix consists of natural 48% gas, 31% hydropower, 18% liquid fuels, 1% each solar and biofuels. Imports from Uganda and Zambia also contribute to meeting demand. The Ministry of Energy is responsible for policy planning and development. A number of independent power producers contribute to 235.31MW, however, only 46.1MW is generated from hydro, solar, biomass and wind. Rural Energy Agency (REA) has a mandate to promote and facilitate availability and access to modern energy services in rural mainland Tanzania. The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) regulates the Electricity Supply Industry.  The country belongs to both the East African and Southern Africa Power Pools and is a member of both the Regional Energy Regulators Association Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory United Republic of Tanzania and the Southern Africa Power Pool.

The national average access stands at 48% with 73% and 22% urban and rural access respectively. Tanzania has set a renewable energy target of 50% contribution by 2025.
