The United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) United for Efficiency (U4E) initiative, the East African Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Efficiency (EACREEE) and SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE) are working together to support the harmonization of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) on room air conditioners and residential refrigerators (cooling products) in the East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) regions.
Project main components:
1. Conduct a regional market assessment covering the 21 countries in the two regions.
2. Engage with technical committee and consult the committee for the standards development.
3. Develop technical notes on refrigerating appliances and air conditioners.
4. Develop draft harmonised MEPS and labels for refrigerating appliances and air conditioners.
5. Provide technical assistance on implementation of MEPS by subset of countries.
UNEP-U4E, SACREEE and EACREEE activities on cooling products are conducted in collaboration with the Energy Efficient Lighting and Appliances (EELA) Project in East and Southern Africa implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in conjunction with EACREEE and SACREEE on harmonizing energy efficient lighting standards and regulations.
