The SADC Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE) is cooperating with the Southern African Power Pool Coordination Centre (SAPP CC) in implementing a portion of the SAPP Program for Accelerating Regional Energy/Transformational Projects (SAPP-AREP) that relates to SACREEE. SAPP-AREP is funded by the World Bank with resources provided by the International Development Association (IDA) and Multi-Donor Trust Fund (MDTF). The program aims to provide technical assistance to and provide support to enhance the capacity and effectiveness of the key regional institutions in addressing infrastructure requirements and challenges in the SADC energy sector in order to strengthen regional integration. The regional institutions include the SADC Secretariat and it's subsidiary Regional Energy Organisations.
Against the development objective of SAPP-AREP, SACREEE seeks to capacitate key Decision Makers in the SADC region on Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) that will incorporate high shares of renewable energy resources in the power planning processes.
The overall objective of the project is to expose decision-makers in the energy sector of the SADC region to the importance and key facets of IRP in the electricity sector especially in the context of the evolving renewable energy and energy storage technologies, climate change impacts, goals for universal electricity access, climate change mitigation and the potential of private sector investments.
