Mozambique has 2,796MW installed capacity, 2,2312MW operating capacity and 1,948MW ¹ peak capacity which is primarily generated by the government-owned the Cahora Bassa hydro dam and operated Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB). Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) is the national utility. The Ministério dos Recursos Minerais e Energia is responsible for the national energy policy and coordination of the activities in the energy sector.

Mozambique is a net exporter of electrical energy in the region. Additional power is generated from combined cycle gas thermal plants and small contribution from solar PV. The contribution of renewable energy capacity from solar, wind and hydro is expected to grow to 44% of total energy generation by 2030 through the PROLER programme. EDM implements rural electrification programmes to accelerate energy access and address the challenge of energy poverty.  Autoridade Reguladora de Energia (ARENE) Mozambique is a member of the Regional Energy Regulators Association and Mozambique is a member of the Southern Africa Power Pool. 

With 40% average national access to energy, the contributions from urban and rural access are 75% and 4% respectively.
