The GN-SEC and UNIDO’s Industrial Energy Accelerator launched the partnership „Regional Capacities for Industrial Energy Efficiency”. The Accelerator is drawing on its collective wealth of experience to produce a series of energy efficiency knowledge kits. These starter kits cover five key energy efficiency solutions: Energy Management Systems; Efficiency Solutions for Motor-Driven Systems; Industrial Heat; Industrial Cooling; as well as Energy Metrics and Performance Indicators.

Growing populations, urbanization, and rising living standards in the regions of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) are driving an increased demand for cooling services. If policies are not implemented in response to this demand, the electricity consumption for room air conditioners and residential refrigerators is expected to increase by 2.5 times by 2040 compared to today in both regions.

We are happy to announce the successful completion of the first and second webinars of the EELA 2021 webinar series. The first webinar that took place on 18 May 2021, was organised in collaboration with the Efficiency for Access Coalition and the University of Edinburgh and was based on their working paper,  Pathways to Repair in the Global Off-Grid Sector.

The Energy Efficient Lighting and Appliances (EELA) project in East and Southern Africa organised a side event at the Vienna Energy Forum (VEF) 2021 on July 7, to discuss the nexus between access to sustainable energy and clean cooling, and showcase country and regional level actions to progress on National Cooling Action Plans (NCAPs). It also explored innovations in digital technologies and business models for sustainable cooling solutions that address the rising demand for cooling in the on and off-grid areas.

We are pleased to announce that the SADCSTAN Executive Committee approved the Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for Lighting at the end of April 2021 as a regional Harmonised Text with reference SADC HT 109:2021.

As the Energy Efficient Lighting and Appliances (EELA) project entered into year 3 (June 2021 – May 2022) one of the major focus areas is to provide technical assistance to the Member States in the national standards adoption and implementation processes.
